About Spice Device

Background

Spice Device arose out of a desire for Theresa Smith to have her father, Bill Smith, keep from being bored in retirement from the aerospace industry. She suggested that he continue to design things as he had done all his working career. She suggested that he think of a way to measure spices without measuring spoons, and thought that a measuring spice cap would be a way to do it. Bill work out the design and finally came up with Spice Device, the measuring cap that measures with a twist of the wrist.

History

Spice Device was a finalist in the QVC search for the best 100 inventions over the prior decade. It was well received by the viewers and was a sell out. One viewer called in and said, “I’m surprised that no one has thought of Spice Device before, its such a great idea.” Spice Device was entered in the American Inventor ABC-TV show and was selected as a finalist, in the top 10 out of 2,500 entries. The panel of three judges included George Foreman who loved the idea because it measures accurately every time. George had put recipe books on the market and had some people send him e-mails criticizing his recipes because they did not turn out the way they had expected. George said that the problem was that the cooks did not measure their spices correctly, and he liked Spice Device because it measures accurately.
