Spice Device was entered in the American Inventor show and was selected as a finalist, in the top 10 out of 2,500 entries. The panel of three judges, which included George Foreman, absolutely loved the idea because it measures accurately every single time. George had put recipe books on the market and had some people send him e-mails criticizing his recipes because they did not turn out the way they had expected. George said that the problem was that the cooks did not measure their spices correctly with their measuring spoons, and for this reason he liked Spice Device because it you are guaranteed to get an accurate measurement of spices every single time.
The Spice Device invention arose out of a desire for Theresa Smith to have her father, Bill Smith, keep from being bored in retirement from the aerospace industry. She had suggested that he continue to design things as he had done his whole working career. She suggested that he should think of a way to measure spices without measuring spoons, and thought that a measuring spice cap would be a way to do it. The idea planted, Bill worked out the design and finally came up with Spice Device, the measuring cap that measures with a twist of the wrist and eliminates the need for all those measuring spoons.
